("Company", "Detour", "we", or "us").
This Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, the choices you have, and how we protect that information. By using the Services you accept the practices described in this Policy.
Key points - what you should know right away:
1/ Visual Search operates primarily on-device: we analyze images on your device to extract coordinates and candidate place matches.
2/ Apple Maps: device-extracted coordinates may be sent to Apple Maps to return nearby place results.
3/ Predictive Search (optional): if you opt in, Detour transmits only a very small, low-resolution thumbnail of the selected image to a third-party AI service (ChatGPT Visual) to generate improved place suggestions. No metadata is sent with that thumbnail (no coordinates, EXIF, timestamps, or device identifiers).
4/ Transient thumbnails: thumbnails sent for Predictive Search are used only to generate suggestions and are not retained by Detour beyond the immediate session.
We collect two broad categories of information:
1/ Personal information you provide: information you submit directly when you create an account or use features (for example: name, date of birth, profile photo and phone number).
2/ Information collected automatically: technical and usage data collected when you use the Services (for example: IP address, device type and OS, referring URLs, usage metrics, crash data, and anonymized analytics).
We may collect the following information depending on how you use the Services:
1/ Account and profile data: name, profile photo, and other profile fields you provide.
2/ Photos and saved spots: photos and location-based spots you save to your account. You control which photos/spots are saved and with whom they are shared.
3/ Device and usage data: device identifiers, device model, OS version, IP address, and performance metrics.
4/ Location data: when you grant permission, we may process precise device location to support location-based features. Location extraction for Visual Search is performed on-device by default.
This section explains how image-based features work and what (if anything) is transmitted off device.
1/ On-device Visual Search: Detour analyzes images locally on your device to extract useful features, including inferred coordinates when available. On-device processing is the default and preferred behavior.
2/ Apple Maps lookups: Coordinates extracted on-device may be used to query Apple Maps to obtain nearby place candidates. That coordinate lookup requires a network request to Apple Maps and may send only the coordinates. Detour does not send the full image to Apple as part of this lookup.
3/ Predictive Search (optional, opt-in): If you enable Predictive Search, Detour sends a very small, low-resolution thumbnail of the selected image to a third-party AI provider (ChatGPT Visual) to generate more precise place suggestions. Important details:
4/ Third-party AI providers: Predictive Search uses third-party AI services. When you opt in, you consent to the thumbnail transmission to the named provider. Use of those services is subject to the provider's terms and privacy practices; please review them before using Predictive Search.
5/ Controls: You can enable or disable Predictive Search any time via Privacy Settings.
We use information for the following purposes (examples):
1/ To provide, operate, and improve the Services and related features.
2/ To enable Visual Search, spot suggestions, and Predictive Search when enabled.
3/ To communicate with you about your account, updates, and offers.
4/ To protect the security and integrity of our Services and users (fraud prevention, abuse detection).
5/ To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
6/ For analytics and business purposes to improve user experience.
We share information in limited circumstances:
1/ With service providers who perform services on our behalf (for example: cloud storage, analytics, email, and AI providers).
2/ With Apple Maps when coordinates are used to retrieve nearby place candidates.
3/ With other users when you choose to share content (for example: spots activity and photos).
4/ For legal reasons: to comply with lawful requests, to protect our rights, and to prevent harm.
5/ In connection with a corporate transaction (sale, merger, asset transfer), with notice to affected users where required by law.
We retain personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.
1/ Saved spots and full-resolution photos you store remain in your account until you delete them or terminate your account.
2/ Predictive Search thumbnails transmitted to third parties are transient and not retained by Detour beyond the search session.
3/ No purpose in this policy will require us to keep your personal information longer than 1 day past the termination of your account, except where otherwise required by law or for legitimate business purposes (e.g., fraud prevention, legal compliance).
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights (examples):
1/ Access: request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
2/ Rectification: request correction of inaccurate personal information.
3/ Erasure: request deletion of your personal information (subject to exceptions).

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information. No internet transmission or storage system is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security. We will notify affected users and authorities as required by law in the event of a qualifying data breach.
Our servers and many of our service providers are located in the United States. By using the Services, you consent to transfer of your information to the United States and to processing in accordance with this Policy. We require vendors to provide appropriate protections for personal data and to use data only to provide contracted services.

We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the date of the latest update at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notices (for example, when changes are material). Continued use after modifications constitutes acceptance.
